It was not because we didn't find any other burger place, but getting recommendations to see the two dudes for a great burger.
Sadly it didn't go as well as we thought. I was looking forward to this, because I saw on the menu that they had a burger topped with hot dogs and chili. Now, all of us that BBQ know, it is great to have burgers and hot dogs together, on their own, but together. Well, this restaurant had it and I thought, what a great combo, his has to be good.
Lets get to the review. I ordered the Atlantic beach, which they call the turtle burger. A combo between 8oz ground chuck, topped with grilled hot dogs and chili. Yeah, what a combo. This has to be good. I ordered my burger medium as I always do and the first thing that I check if they got the order right. No, right from the get-go, a strike against them.

The burger was well done and I realized when I cut into it, it looked very plain like regular hamburger meat with no spices in it. But I thought, well, looks might be wrong, so here we go. I tasted it. I expected to be overwhelmed with all those different flavors in one, burger, dogs, chili and was waiting for the explosion. hmmmm, I'm still waiting. Let me make this short and right to the point. The meat had no spices in it, the hot dogs were alright, the chili was very plain too. Oh wait, there was cheese on it as well. I'm not a cheese person and forgot to tell them to keep it off. Didn't matter because I didn't taste it. I was afraid I was losing my taste that day, but I wasn't. My partner in crime was the same opinion. It wasn't a bad burger, good size and great price for what you get. But I wish they would do more with spices. So in my review I would have to give them a 3 out of 10. My partner is giving a bit higher rating, that is why the average is 3.5.
On a side note to the review, we also tried their shrimps and they were awesome. Great size and great taste. Their fries were also great. Would I go back for a burger. Doubt it. For seafood, absolutely. In my opinion, the burger could be great if they pay more attention to what people order and add more spices to their meat.

We've received numerous messages from people to try it. Well, we did. For sure we hit the right spot for a burger. Let me just get the entire review into one word. It was A-W-E-S-O-M-E. As you can see from the menu there are a few burgers to choose from.
I went for the one that I thought was the one with a twist, so I decided on the
The Holick Burger'. I don't think I've seen a burger yet that was combined with a braised pork belly. Well here we go. The burger looked great when it arrived. Of course I ordered it medium cooked as always and first test is to test that. Bingo, right on the money. Was perfectly cooked. This was such a strange combo with that pork belly when I bit into this. Combine this with the egg (which I love eggs on burgers anyway), not to forget the Arugula and the bread and butter pickles. Well, let me just say this. What a great delight of all those different mixtures of tastes put together. It was like an explosion in your mouth. Wow, what a great combo of tastes. For some strange reason they all fit together and to add that it for sure made it out of the norm burger taste.

The meat was so flavor full, perfectly spiced and was so full of that oh so good juice that we all love. The fries were cooked perfectly as well, not greasy at all. For my taste there was a bit to much sea salt on them, but for others might taste perfect. Just as a side note, make sure you order their special catsup, it was something to taste. Great spicy addition.

It was a real delight and for me it had that wow factor from the moment I took my first bite into it. I highly recommend if you want some awesome burger to check this place out.
I'm very pleased how lately we are finding more places that really know how to make a burger and show pride in making a burger. Would I take the drive to this bar to get a burger, not only yes, but hell yes. Awesome job Blind Rabbit, don't change what you are doing with those burgers.
I'm starting to really enjoy our burger reviews in Jacksonville, they are getting better and better. But we are not giving up to find even better ones. So the search continues.......

Let me start his blog with this....holy moly, what a freaking huge burger. Now that I got this out, lets review our next Burgergeeks burger challenge. We'd been contacted by the owner to see if he is right that he has the best burger in Jacksonville. Well, lets see if he does. First impression was that we loved the menu, many choices when it comes to the burger and also as I call the 'wow' factor. Burgers that you normally don't see as a combo like a burger with shrimp, whhhattttt?? OK, this will be interesting. So, for myself I thought I'll go for the the big one, the "Andy Altee" which is two 8oz patties, 3 slices of cheese, and 6 slices of bacon. Bring it on. As you can see from the picture, they brought it on. As always, I ordered mine cooked medium and with fries. I saw that they also had chili and with me spending a lot of time in TEXAS and loving chili (and I happen to make one kick ass chili myself) I had to order that too. More on that later. So, first thing I check was if the burger was cooked correctly and it was.

Right on the money as you can see from the picture when I cut it open. The size of this thing is amazing, just mind blowing. Now the next thing I do is taste the meat by itself to see how the seasoning is and man is it good. Yeah, someone took some time with this meat. It had a great taste to it. Well seasoned and very juicy when I tasted it. I have to give them so much credit for their bacon as well. Those were not some little strings of bacon that you get in so many restaurants in town. Oh no, these were some real thick slices of bacon and perfectly cooked. Not greasy and very crispy. I'm getting more and more the feeling those cooks in there know what they were doing. I'm still amazed how big this burger was. Let me go on with the cheese and the entire thing. It all fitted perfectly together. Even the bun was a great tasting bread and what not to frufru as so many other places try to make. Was simple and right to the point being a hamburger bun and not to forget, to cover this massive amount of food and keeping it together. Now for the lettuce I wasn't to impressed about it, but to me that was just minor and didn't effect the score in my mind. I was after the cow sorte say and man oh man did they put a good part of this cow on there.

Yeah Chic-fil-A you lost with this competition on eating more chicken. I had to add another picture when I cut it open so you all can see what this burger looks like cut open. I mean look at that thing. I don't think the picture does it even justice. Let me also add this, I'm not a tiny guy and I love food and I know how to eat, but I could not finish this monster. I pretty much took another meal with me home which I loved. Let me say this that you better bring some hunger when you order that one from the menu. I was very pleased with this hamburger and after the last two burger attempts we reviewed I'm glad we went to taste this one.

Now on a side note let me give a quick review on the fries and chili. I can't stand it when you get rubbery fries drenched in greasy like we have been served in a few restaurants. Again, what a great job on the fries, well cooked, no rubbery feel, not greasy and very crispy. Now the chili, my hats off, finally some restaurant in Jax that knows how to make chili. You can get it with beans or without, of course I had to get it without. It was fantastic. Whoever came up with that recipe knows how to make chili and how to cook it. So again my hat is off.

So in my humble opinion, this burger from Ketchup gets a 10 out of 10 from me. Would I drive to Mayport to get this burger? I would have to say not only yes, but Hell Yes! Well worth it. Also great atmosphere and the staff was friendly and very attentive. Not to forget you can bring your dog to sit outside and they feed them too, which I got a kick out off and love that.

After we completed our review and paid our bill, we notified the owner and Chef Ace French that we were there. I was very impressed how concerned he was what we felt about the burger. It really came through that he is really proud of the food he serves there and told us how he gets up at 6 in the morning just to get the meat ready and mixed. Now this shows me how restaurants should care what they give to their customers. For sure he does. In this place they just don't mass produce their food and care what they give you. That was my impression. So happy to see that after some other reviews we had and just being treated like the next number. I can't wait to go back and taste some of the other burgers or even other items on their menu. If they are as good as this, then man oh man I have to drive to Mayport often. I highly recommend this restaurant if you want a burger that is out of the norm in our town. Now the question is, who can out do them. We have some more restaurants to review in the coming months......the challenge continues........

Do you like really good burgers? Then I think we found a place for you. Our latest burger review brought us to Ketchup, located at 2434 Mayport Road. This was a lunchtime visit and I brought my appetite (I was starving). The first thing I noticed was that the burger menu was impressive. I had to step back and ponder which burger I wanted to try. There were more creative combinations here than any other place we've visited so far: 14 different 8 oz. burgers and one 16 oz. behemoth called the Andy Altee. Styles ranged from the Classic burger with lettuce, tomato and onion, to the Harley burger topped with pulled pork and melted Jack cheese, to the Wooten burger with fried oysters, wasabi cream sauce and pepper jack cheese. And if you prefer, each combination can be ordered on chicken instead of beef. I settled on the Avery, which is a half pound burger topped with fried onion straws, sautéed Vidalia onions and melted smoked Gouda. I ordered fries as my included side, and added a bowl of their homemade chili with beans. When my burger arrived, my jaw dropped. This thing was HUGE. The burger was cooked to medium as ordered. The burger patty was flavorful and juicy with a hint of the applewood smoked bacon. The bun was fresh and the onion toppings were in ample supply. I love onions but I did remove some of the topping to suite my taste and to not drown out the flavor of the rest of the ingredients. I truly enjoyed this burger. The fries were perfectly cooked and served hot. The chili was very good as well. I ordered mine with beans, while my counterpart prefers his without. Ketchup makes a batch of each so take your pick. The chili comes topped with shredded cheddar cheese and sliced onions (I think diced would be better so they mix in easier). Between the huge burger, mound of French fries, and the chili I couldn't finish everything, so I took my chili home to enjoy the next day. I don't think anyone goes home hungry after eating at Ketchup.

I rated my Avery burger as follows: 3 points for the fresh-ground black angus and bacon patty, 2 points for the bun, 3 points for the generous toppings, plus a well-deserved "wow factor" point for such a massive, tasty burger. My overall individual rating: 9. I will definately go back to try some of the other creative burger combinations. I also want to try the housemade hotdogs and deserts. Ketchup is the real deal.

Our latest burger review brings us to BurgerFi at the St. John's Town Center. According to their website these are gourmet burgers. The pictures looked impressive. Needless to say our expectations were high. Afterwards, my thoughts are..Fee Fi, Ho Hum.

I ordered the BurgerFi cheeseburger, a double natural Angus patty double american cheese with lettuce, tomato and BurgerFi sauce. On the side I got the double fry; half French fries, half onion rings. I thought the onion rings were good but the fries were soggy. As you can see in the picture the fries and onion rings dwarfed my burger. I was expecting something that looked like the photos. Flavor of the patty was OK, kind of plain. The bun had the BurgerFi logo branded into it (nice touch) but more effort should have been out into using a better bun, this one was ordinary. Overall the burger was not "bad", just mediocre. I didn't even detect the BurgerFi sauce. Size wise I would say it was between a Five Guys double cheeseburger and a Steak & Shake double cheese burger. If I had ordered a burger with a single patty I would have been left hungry. I feel I'm being generous giving this one 5 stars.

Well I wish I would have not found it. You can imagine where this is going. I was not impressed at all with the burger. First the size of the burger was pretty small compared to the title of it. I ordered the Supreme burger and doubled it. As my partner in crime mentioned, we had high hopes for this, but personally I was very disappointed. All over the restaurant and on the main menu screen you see those great pictures of those huge burgers. Well, as you can see from the Burgernator picture and mine, this was far from what we saw on the pictures.

The first impression I had was that the burger wasn't really hot, kinda warm but far from hot and I picked it up the sec I was called to do so.

For this to be a Supreme Burger and me putting a double everything on it, it was pretty small. Now we were not asked how they should be cooked, so I thought, sure, they are trying to cook them all the way. For sure they did. They weren't burned, but for sure all the way cooked through. I added a picture so you can see what I'm talking about. Sorry to say I was not impressed about the taste at all. For them going on about being all Angus and stuff and this will change your view on Burgers, well it did. I thought that the taste was below average. Nothing special about it. The cheese was alright, the bacon was alright, the bun was alright but I personally thought for a fresh made bun it looked like someone pushed it. Hmm really, why? They claim everything is freshly made and never frozen.

Well sorry, if I take some frozen Angus patties and throw them in the pan, I will have this and probably better because my burgers rock or I wouldn't be so picky on my reviews. I'm a bit more harsh then my partner but in my humble opinion this burger was nothing special and now to add to this experience were the onion rings and fries. Man oh man, talk about adding to the entire picture. To me the onions rings looked good, but that was about it. I thought they were way to greasy and the fries. Well the pictures showed some of them I thought they were way to soggy and they felt like rubber and some were way overcooked almost to a burn as you can see looking at the really brown one. Really? How difficult is it to make fries that are good and properly cooked. I love my fries well cooked and crispy, man were they far from it. As with all my reviews they are my opinion on the food and might be different from everybody's experience, but I try to say how I see it. To me the burger was ok but the fries and onion rings were way shyte in my views. So on we go to more burger reviews to come. My rating is a 2 out of 10.
For our next review it brought us to Johnny Angel's. We received a few suggestions from people to check this place and their burger. Before we go into the burger just let me tell you that this is a place to see. I felt like going back into a time warp into the 'Back to the Future' and showing up into the 50's. I love that. The entire atmosphere in there was very entertaining. But enough of the hype going into the real reason why we were there. They have a nice selection of burgers, from your James Dean to your Atomic burger. I picked the Heavy Chevy which comes with chili which is also a challenge by itself for restaurants to make enjoyable to eat. Anyway, here is what was served as the Heavy Chevy as the presentation. Before I get into the specifics let me just mention that we also ordered the onion rings which I'm a huge fan off, if they are done correctly. Believe me, there are many restaurants that can't make onion rings or even french fries correctly and in other words are shyte. I have to say, they probably made the best onion rings I have had so far.
They were awesome, huge, perfectly cooked, tasty, so worth getting. But enough of that, lets look at the burger. The burger was perfectly cooked how I ordered it. The chili on top was by the best alright. I spent many years in Texas and got spoiled for having awesome chili. So in this case, wish it would have been better. Actually I have to say that the burger was good, but not where I would go, out of the ordinary. I felt that it lacked a lot of seasonings in the meat. Even the chili was kinda of blahhh. Was OK, not bad, but was missing something, if you know what I mean. Same for the burger, it was OK. Now, if you take this burger with the combination of the atmosphere, the fries and the onion rings. Sure, I would order it again. Great place to hang out and enjoy the surroundings. But because we are doing a burger review here. Would I come here just for this burger, sadly I would have to say no. I know my partner in crime has a bit of a different view on his burger that he received and his review is coming next.
Jacksonville beach area. Thank you Nicole for giving us the recommendation. When we ordered the hamburger of course the first question was how do you want it cooked. Of course right away I thought to myself I wonder if they actually going to cook it this way. I ordered mine medium rare. Here goes there first plus point because, guess what, I got my hamburger medium rare. As you can see from the picture the burger looked already awesome. It was a good sized hamburger everything looked delicious . Let's see if looks can be deceiving. I took a cut through the hamburgers to see if it was cooked just as I ordered it and it looked perfect .

Now I took my first bite . The juices were flowing from the meat and it tasted oh so good . While I am continuing to eat the hamburger I'm starting to taste some spices, the lettuce, the pickles and the chili that I ordered to be on top of it and not to forget the cheese to finish it all off. After I took a few more bites I started to compare in my mind the burger to other reviews that we've done. The hamburger tasted great but it didn't taste as good as it looked. To me the lettuce and pickles just had an ordinary taste nothing special like the place we reviewed before where you thought everything was just picked out of a garden just for your burger. Don't get me wrong this was a very good burger and that is why I gave it a score of 8. What was missing here was the extra touch the wow factor. Would I come here just for a hamburger, I think I would just for the atmosphere and how great Poe's looks, it is an experience. The waiter staff was attentive and we didn't have to wait long to get the service. Because I'm looking also at the rest of the meal like the french fries and the onion rings, I do have to mention that I was not impressed with those items . They were very greasy and did not compliment the burger . In my opinion this is one of the good hamburgers in Jacksonville but is it the best? No it's not, so the hunt continues..........
The first impression I had was, a lot of people here . Those burgers must be awesome.

Lets get right to it . After a long wait the burger arrived. Let me give you my opinion about this burger.

When the burger arrived I was thinking hmmm not so sure if I Like the presentation of this. But as we know looks can be wrong. So we attacked the challenge. Right from the going, the burger was not cooked how I wanted it. It wasn't medium at all. So the first little ding, but well maybe the taste was good. Nope, not at all. It tasted burned. Everything just tasted like, how should I put this. Fast food on its worst day. The bacon was kinda bacon, but really had no taste to it. The letters looked and tasted like someone cut them the day before and they were just laying around so they threw it on the burger. The meat was tough, no seasoning in it from what I could taste. So, I was not impressed at all. I kept on looking around and thinking, what the heck are all those people doing here. Well yes, they are shopping and anything to eat would do I guess. Maybe we expect more because we review burgers and we already had great burgers so the expectation is high. I don't know, but to me, this was a poor example of a burger. Now because we look at the entire thing at a restaurant I do have to mention the onion rings. They were huge. They looked great. Ok, lets stop right there. Perfect example how it is not all about looks. The sec I picked them up, the grease was just dripping down. I never had onion rings that looked so good and tasted so bad. When you touched them, the grease was just dripping of them. It was so bad, we all didn't even eat them. So the entire experience of this place was not very good, I'm sorry to say. Let me mention again, this review is my opinion and if we ever go back and have a better experience, I will edit this review. For now though, I don't think I will try this Mshack again. For sure, not worth the drive there. BurgerMeister

Our hunt for the best burger in Jacksonville is bringing us to the Moxie Kitchen + Cocktails. Thanks to Greg for this recommendation, not only for that, but he also joined us to review this burger. Enough of the intro, lets get right into the guts of things. As you can see from the title, we were impressed with this burger. We actually got a little frustrated with the burger tasting we done lately. Nothing really that exciting. There were some we did, we didn't even post because it wasn't worth it. It would have been a one liner saying, yup, burger is ok. Nothing special. Well, our frustration was answered with this burger. I can only say wow. As you can see from the pictures it was something to see. Our first impression was that we all got our burger exactly cooked how we wanted them. I ordered a medium rare and man it was perfectly cooked that way. Another burgergeek ordered it medium well and bingo it was that way. We all said that this is the first time we actually all got exactly what we wanted. So first impressions were good so far. But we have learned, it is not about looks. So into the battle we went, the taste test.

Right away it tasted like everything was freshly made or picked. What I mean by that is the onions, the lettuce, the pickles, just everything tasted so fresh like it just came from a garden. The onions tasted like they were just cut for this burger. I hope you all know what I mean. Sometimes you can taste if ingredients were laying around for a while or were cut the day before. Not this time. The burger was just so juicy and the taste itself was just awesome. Per their description they put bacon into the meat. Oh yes, you can taste it. The spices were done perfectly. Now to my wow factor. It was the egg. Not just the egg, because if you read some other reviews you know I love egg on my burger. We'll talk about prices here in a few but they were saying that their eggs are open range farm grown and it cost me an extra 2 bucks to put that on there. Was it worth it. Short answer, yes. Long answer, oh my lord what a difference. Just looking at the egg, it was so....how should I put it....eggie. lol. Just perfectly looking, it looked great, strong white, strong colors in the egg jog. Let me include a picture here so you can see what I mean.

Do zoom into the picture to see how good it looked. So did it taste good, oh yes, what a egg taste, it fitted perfectly with the burger and it was perfectly cooked. There was nothing running other then what should be running once cut. I do have to mention the fries, I know we are reviewing the burgers but we do look at the total package. The fries were awesome. I couldn't stop eating them. Perfectly cooked, no greasy mess, perfectly season on them. It was just perfect.
We are always the opinion that when it comes to the burger, a lot depends on the cooks. I tell you one thing, this place has a chef who knows how to make good food. Wow, we all were very impressed. Now a little bit to the part we didn't like. The price, now of course this is the kind of place that I call fru fru. Some new yappie place sorte say. So the burger was 14 dollars and you had to pay extra for the bacon and for the egg,so this burger ended up around 16 dollars or so. So the question is, was it worth it. Well, not only yes, but hell yes. I have no problem paying extra if it is worth it and in this case. Oh yes, big time. I do also want to mention that the service was outstanding, very attentive wait staff, even the manager come by to check on our water. We tasted some other items on the menu and deserts. Yes very fru fru, but worth the try. I mention pig ears, lol. An experience for sure. The desert, chocolate covered peanut thingy, oh yes, out of this world.
So without writing a book here, is it worth going there for the burger. OH yes. I would take the drive and I would pay the extra money to have this experience.
My hope is back to taste awesome burgers in Jacksonville, but we will keep on searching because thanks to all you guys sending us emails with recommendation, we will keep this going until we find the best ever burger in Jacksonville. Well this one is on top for sure. BurgerMeister
The latest stop in our quest brings us to the Moxie Kitchen + Cocktails. Moxie is located at the St. Johns Town Center, and is a very nice, upscale establishment. One look at the menu and you'll notice that they serve many chef-inspired dishes and that it's not the least expensive place to dine, but it is not your typical fare. They feature one burger, appropriately named the Moxie Burger. Someone with some culinary know-how put some thought into this and kicked this burger up a few notches. For starters, the burger is a 1/2 lb. beef-pork-bacon blend. Mmmm, bacon. It is served on a brioche bun with your choice of add-ons, a generous portion of crispy fries and a side of Ms. Mary's pickles. I ordered my burger cooked medium, topped with American cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion. For the first time ever, all the burgers we ordered arrived cooked as requested. Kudos to the kitchen! In our experience, it has been more a rare occasion (no pun intended) to receive a burger that was cooked as requested. The first thing I do with my burger is to taste a piece of the patty before anything else is added to judge the flavor. This burger was outstanding! Really juicy with tons of flavor and just the right amount of bacon smokiness. Mmmm, bacon. The toppings were cool and crispy, and the brioche bun was fresh. Since the burger tasted so good, I decided to eat the burger without adding any condiments (a first). I have got to say, this was probably one of, if not THE best tasting burger I have had in all our burger reviews. Delicious to the very last bite, and the fries were also a golden, crispy delight. I honestly couldn't eat them all. Using my rating scale, I give the brioche bun a 3 out of 3, the toppings a 3 out of 3, and the burger gets a 3 out of 3 plus 1 point extra for the wow factor. Absolutely delicious, and well deserving of my highest rating - a perfect 10. Thank you Moxie for a great burger. I am already planning on another trip to have another. To any of you burger lovers out there, I highly recommend the Moxie burger.

Burgernator
As we all know, even though a burger looks good, that doesn't make it delicious. Time for the taste test. First inspection of my burger and I wished it was more medium like I had ordered it, rather than well done. Fortunately it still looked very juicy. Now to the first bite. Yup it was very good. The meat was very juicy, all the ingredients tasted fresh and well-balanced on the burger. So the bottom line is, would I come back here just for the burger? Yes, I think I would, not to mention their service was also excellent and their Bang Bang shrimp appetizer is to die for. So my rating is a 7 out of 10, as I felt it like many burgers it was still missing the wow factor, that one thing that makes a burger stand out above all others.
After several months on hiatus, we are back on the hunt for great burgers. Our latest stop is Bonefish Grill on San Jose Blvd. What, you say? We'll, we've been hearing that the burger is really good, so we're here to see if the rumors are true. Besides, they have Bang Bang shrimp for appetizer. I ordered the "American Style" Kobe beef burger, with cheese, cooked medium.
My burger arrived fresh and hot and nicely presented with fries (it's usually served with housemade chips, but I'm about traditional, and this is the American Style burger after all). I tried a piece of the burger and it was cooked perfectly, still juicy and had a nice charbroiled flavor. The brioche bun was toasted, the tomato, lettuce and onion were fresh and cool, not warm and wilted. I really enjoyed the combination of flavors, and liked the burger very much. Using my 10 point rating system, I give the burger 3 out of 3, the bun 2 out of 3, and the toppings 3 out of 3, no extra point for the "Wow" factor. The total score is an 8. A solid score for a well executed tasty burger. Nice job Bonefish Grill!
My fellow BurgerGeeks may disagree with my rating, but I found this burger to be as close to perfection as a burger can be. I debated giving it a 10; but, perhaps my ultimate burger is yet to be experienced. On to the review. Often, I have been to Longhorn for a steak. Going for the express purpose of ordering a burger was a new concept. I chose the Bacon and Cheddar Burger cooked medium well. It arrived just as ordered: slightly pink in the middle. The bacon, which covered the surface of the burger, was crispy not chewy. Just as the menu promised, the cheese had been melted onto the burger not laid across at the last moment. That it arrived hot, not lukewarm, was an added bonus. Initially, I tried a bit of the burger patty without any of the toppings. As with TGIFs, I wanted to know if the burger would stand on its own. Much to my taste buds' delight, it definitely did. I would enjoy this burger without the bun and without any toppings. It was seasoned much like the Renegade Steak. I could tell that it was made with quality beef. And, inspite of my preference for beef that doesn't 'moo' at me from the plate, it was juicy - as juicy as the burgers of my fellow BurgerGeeks who prefer the 'moo'. I savored each bite of this burger. When I'm much older and am no longer able to chew a steak, I would order this burger as an excellant substitute. Using the burgergeek drive scale, if I really had a hankerin' for a quality burger, I definitely would drive 5 miles out of my way to get this one. - Becky
Yeeehhaaaa Longhorn here we come. This was another place that I looked forward too. I though to myself, well, they can make steaks, how can you mess up a burger if you know how to do a steak. Well, they didn't disappoint. Even though, there was the wow factor missing for me, but the burger made up for it in taste. This burger was great, juicy, perfectly cooked. Everything tastes fresh and well presented. The staff is always friendly at Longhorns, so nothing to complain there. The fries were good, so I have to agree with Becky on this one. I would have to rate them as well a 9 out of 10. You want a great tasting burger, this place is where you find it.
It just shows me again, it doesn't take a genius to make a good tasting burger. The meat was very well spiced, you could taste that this one came right off the grill. I'm still surprised how perfectly it was done. Let me explain what I mean there. If you order a medium, you get most of the time the middle being pink. Well not this one. It was all pink except the outer end. Just how I prefer it. Again, this is just me. I like my meat a little bloody. I know what some of you might say, meat should be cooked all the way to make it safe. Well, guess I like to live on the edge when it comes to food. But enough of that, go check out that burger, you will not regret it. I would even take a drive to get that burger. Great now I'm getting hungry for one, but we are still searching for the best burgers in Jacksonville. So little time, so many burgers to test. Hidiho on to the next burger we go..........
Today our search took us in the middle of Jacksonville downtown area. We visited Olio, located at 301 E. Bay Street. Right away I have to say, the restaurant gave out a European flavor and felt different. The staff was very friendly and was ready to help with any kind of special requests we had to the burger. Well lets see how they done. As you can see the burger looked great in the presentation with the fries in the paper cup. My little addition to the wow factor was to have them put a egg on it sunny side up. Yes I know, some of you might go, ewwww, how can you. Well, you better try it, because it tastes awesome if done right. I have to say, Olio did it right. The burger tasted very good. Good enough that I would take a drive just to get their burger. Everything tasted fresh and the bun was right on the money as well. I would have to put them into my high category of the voted 9's when it comes to burger reviews. Excellent job Olio, keep it up. But, we are still hunting for the best burgers in Jax, so many to taste, so little time. On we go, its a dirty job, but somebody has to do it..............
No I didn't put up the wrong rating on that one. You did read right. Our first 1 rating from all the places we reviewed. I'm still shocked I had to give this low of a rating.
Lets get to the meat of it all. Our search brought us to Cruisers Grill. I'm sure some of you in Jacksonville heard about Cruisers Grill and that they made a local news papers number 1 slot for best burger in Jax. I was looking forward to visiting this place for a few months now. I was also informed that they made another article in the recent week being voted as the one of the best burger places in town. Well, I was excited to test them out.

As some of you already know I always look for the wow factor in burgers. The ones that are different from a regular burger. The other burgergeeks stick to the normal ones and they will have their own rating on these. So, when I sat down and saw the sign, Burger of the week, deep fried I was all fired up. As you remember, the Bubba Burger deep fried burger was awesome. So, of course I had to order it. Now as you can see from the picture I was a little set back when it arrived. My first impression of just the look was, 'oh my, this looks like an old shoe sole'. But I thought, well, looks can be deceiving, so I went or it. My first thought taking a bite was, no way, they must be kidding. If they would have deep fried the shoe sole I'm sure it would have tasted better. OMG, in one word I have to say: This burger was total shyte. I really try not to slam any kind of restaurant even if I'm not impressed with their burger. But this was not a burger but some meat they thought, lets throw this into hot oil and deep fry it and it will be good, as they say, everything deep friend is good. Hellll no it isn't. This was a perfect example it wasn't. There was no batter on it, nothing, just a bunch of ground beef that they deep fried. I think if you just click on the image of it and view the close up you can see what I'm saying. I also have to say that the fries were alright. Seemed to me not cooked long enough and tasted a little raw on the inside.
Now the other burgergeeks had their regular burgers and they said that they were alright, but in no way could they call this top winner of burgers in Jacksonville. I think the no named newspaper should look at some of our reviews and make a better decision on who has the best burger in Jax. For sure, this place does not. I'm so disappointed.
Well, what can I say, the hunt continues........
There are a lot of interesting dishes at the establishment. I hate to say though that the burger was not one of them. Not sure where to start on this one. I was so hoping this was a homemade burger that would blow my socks off. As you can see from the picture it didn't even look too impressive. I got the patty melt which I was hoping would have potential wow factor. It didn't. Now, it did have an alright taste, but as I said, an alright taste is not something that makes me think OMG I have to come back again for this one. Sometimes I think maybe we have reviewed so many places and maybe jI might be looking for too many things. In my quest to find the best Burger in Jax, this was not a winner. As you can see from the picture, the presentation wasn't that impressive. I think you know what I'm saying just looking at the picture. The cheese wasn't melted all the way. The meat itself has an alright taste, it had some spices in it. The fries were alright as well. Nothing to write home about. Sadly, this is it for that review. I do have to admit though, some of their other food looked awesome. I will come back, but not for their burgers.
The hunt continues......
I can almost hear the groans of discontent coming from TGIFriday's fans. My rating is not a reflection on the restaurant. It is strictly about the burger. On the recommendation of another burger geek, I ordered the Jack Daniel's burger. It is served with your choice of the standard burger toppings as well as cheese, bacon, and an awesome Jack Daniel's sauce - which comes on the side. In my opinion, the sauce definitely makes this burger. I'll explain. Immediately, I noticed that the shape and size of everybody's burger was identical - no variation. As a national chain striving for consistency, they hit the bull's eye. The bacon, which was lying cross-crossed on the melted cheese, was neither underdone nor overdone. My first taste of the sauce was on a french fry. I was pleasantly surprised as it didn't taste anything like I was expecting it would based on the name. It was sweet without a hint of pungent alcohol that I was expecting. I ordered the burger well done. It came as ordered and wasn't dried out or burnt. As I took my first bite with the sauce, I was impressed with how good the burger was. However, after a few more bites, I had to know if it was only the sauce that impressed me. So, I tried a bite of burger only. That's when I knew it's all about the sauce. The burger standing on its own was very bland. After that minor let down, I realized that the entire meal was, at best, lukewarm. Without the sauce, this would have been like any other chain's burger. And, that is why I rate it a 5. No, I wouldn't drive 5 miles out of my way to have this burger; but, I would definitely recommend it to friends.

One of our other geeks was very impressed with this burger when he gotten it before. A Jack Daniel's burger, how can you go wrong with that title in it? Well, I hate to disagree with my brother in crime, but I wasn't to impressed with the burger. The BBQ sauce was outstanding. It made the entire burger. Without it though, the burger tasted pretty ordinary. Tasted like there were no spices used for it. Now, TGIF did a great job on that BBQ addition to the hamburger. I think you could put this on anything and it would taste fantastic. In this case I voted for a 5 out of 10, the reason being, that the addition of the BBQ sauce made that burger and for sure worth trying. As Becky mentioned though, I wouldn't take a drive just to go there to get it. Also one of the things that always gets me in restaurants. If you cook the burger all the way, then don't ask me how I would like it. If I say medium, it should be and not cooked all the way. The hunt continues.........
Our hunt for the best burger in Jacksonville brought us to the Pine Grove Market http://www.pinegrovemarket.com/ . First impression I have to say I like those kind of places. Small neighborhood places where you can find some of the secret culinary places that give you the best experiences.
Let's get right to the burger. The first thing that hit me was the presentation. I think this was the first time I saw a burger cut in half. My burger was ordered medium and right away I could see, yup, cooked perfectly. As you can see from the picture it was a great size as well. Looking at the burger I have to say, it looked great, smelled good, so the first impression was: 'Yes I'm looking forward to this'. Once I took my first bite I have to say it tasted very good. The mixture of spices and the meat tasted great. As you can see from the picture I ordered mine with fries and with onion rings. Holy crap those rings where huge. They as well tasted very good as the fries did.

I'm sure you wonder why my score isn't higher with me saying everything was good. Well, as you know I'm looking for the extra wow factor when it comes to burgers. This was a great burger, but it reminded me to much of a burger I would do at home. So, yes, I know, isn't that what it should be? Great tasting burger you could get home? Yes and no. I'm looking for the burger which I can't do at home or blows my mind how well it was done. In this instance I have to say. Yes, the burger was great but somehow was missing the umpf sorte say. Would I recommend going there to try it. Absolutely I would recommend it. Would I take the drive there though just for the hamburger. I would have to say, no.
My first BurgerGeek foray was to the Pine Grove Market in Riverside just east of Park Street. The Market is a neighborhood jewel. The kind of place I imagine exists on most NYC corners. On to the review. My first impression was this looks like my Momma's burger: Thick and moist, made with quality beef. That the burger and fries were served on a real plate may have added to the illusion. Taking my first bite, I was pleased by the taste: not to much seasoning and not bland. Moist but not falling apart. Definitely fresh, quality beef. Not frozen, trucked and thawed patties. The only thing missing were the cross-hatch marks and that slight hickory flavor from a backyard grill. The fries were nicely done. Not to thick or to thin with a good flavor. They complimented the burger well. The available toppings were the expected minimum burger standards - which was more than enough for me.

That said, my rating is a 7 out of 10. Why? I really could make a burger like this myself. However, for a quick fix of homemade on a hectic workday without the prep and cleanup hassle, this burger would sure do the trick. Using the BurgerGeek drive scale, no, I wouldn't go out of my way to have this burger; but, if I was already in the neighborhood, you bet I would.

Our search brought us to the Southern Grill located at 800 Flagler Ave. This restaurant offers a variety of dishes which one of them is a burger and that is why we are here.

Just the smell alone coming to the table made your mouth water. I was shocked taking my first bite how good it tasted. It was perfectly cooked exactly how I wanted it. Everything tasted fresh, homemade, cooked fresh. I think we all were shocked how good this burger tasted. The size was perfect. Not to forget the fries, fitted perfectly and tasted great as well. The only thing that was missing was that shake to make it the 'American perfect meal'.

If you are looking for a great hamburger then this is the place to try, highly recommend it. Hmmm actually thinking going back for another one........
Our next target was Wild Wing Cafe located at 4555 south side blvd. The first thought is that this place is not what normally comes to your mind when it comes to burgers, but a few people recommended to us to try them.

Let's get right to the meat of things. As you probably figured out from my reviews I'm the one in the group that always looks for that wow factor in burgers. When the waitress arrived with my order I was like, wow, look at that thing. If this is not a wow factor. Got my burger with egg on it, topped with some sloppy joe sauce. Not to forget the huge onion ring on top. As you can see from the picture it was a sight to see.

I think I had a smile on my face attacking this behemoth of a burger. Well, now to the sad part and why the score is not sky high for them. The taste was blahhhh. Nothing really tasted good. The burger was kinda no taste, no taste at all. Same with the sloppy joe topping . Somehow everything tasted like, how should I say. No spices at all. Very blend and boring. It's a shame because look at that thing, it great looking.

Just to add another disappointment were their fries, not sure what they thought off. But just cutting up some potatoes and throwing them into the deep fryer and calling them french fries does not work at times. In this case it didn't. Same as the total experience the fries didn't taste like anything special.

So sad, such a good looking burger. The search continues ...........
Our endless search brought us to Dave and Busters. As we all know this place is famous for the gaming but we got the recommendation to try their burgers. Sorry to say I wish we didn't get it. I didn't have big hopes, but you never know where you find that great burger. Let's get right into it. Right from the get go I was disappointed that the burger was not cooked, how I wanted it. Why ask how you want your burger, if you can't provide it.
Just looking at the picture I think you can already see the problem. It was so greasy, which of course gives the burger normally a great taste and texture, but not here. The minute you picked this burger up, it was just dripping the fat, way to much for my taste. All the burgers we got were the same size, the same cut, the same grease. It was screaming 'I'm a frozen burger' for mass production. Overall it had an alright taste, nothing special about it. If you are there for the games and want a quick burger, sure, why not. Would I recommend it? No.
The Cheesecake factory was our next target for doing a burger review. They are located at the Town-center. Personally I have been looking forward to this for a while now. One of the reasons was that I heard they had a Kobe burger. Let me get right to the meat of things sorte say. First impressions of the restaurant of course is grandiose, very clean, very elegant even though it does have a little flair of 'elegant fast food setup'. What I mean by this, was the feeling, sit down, order, eat and get out so the next customers can sit down. With that said, lets look at our burger experience. Right from the start I have to say the burger looked great. Everything looked fresh, well presented. Cutting open the burger was perfectly cooked just how I ordered it. Now, here comes the important part. Was my first bite the wow factor that I expected. Well, yes and no. I was looking for that, oh my God, this is Kobe meat. The cows that are feed only the best and from what I've seen on TV being massaged to make the meat nice and juicy. Hmmm, maybe I was expecting someone to come by and massage me while I'm eating this. I really don't know what I expected. But, it didn't happen. I tried very hard to find a difference in burgers I had before to this one and I couldn't find one. Now for the overall taste of the burger I have to admit. That was one great tasting burger. It was juicy, well seasoned, perfectly cooked. Everything a burger should have. Did I taste anything different? Sorry to say, I didn't. As from some of our previous reviews you can get some great tasting burger from regular beef. Would I recommend this burger to someone? Absolutely.

It was a great, great burger. One of best I had and for this they get a high score. Again, I'm missing the wow factor, that makes it stand out from the rest. That it lacked a bit. Would I go and have another one of those. Well, if I'm in the neighborhood, sure. Would I take a drive there just for the burger, probably not. Lucky for us Burgergeeks it just means, the hunt continues, for the holy grail of Burgers.....
Our next hunt for the best burger in Jacksonville brought us to Kickbacks Gastropub located at 910 Kings st. First off I have to say that this is the second time we visited this establishment. The reason is actually shocking. We couldn't believe they could repeat what they served us the first time. Also at this time we didn't have this blog yet, so we had two reason to visit there again, take pictures of the Burger plus to see if they can wow us again. They did. I was so impressed the first time that I thought, maybe I was to hungry the first time or it was just a lucky hit. No it wasn't. Kickbacks, has one of the best burgers I ever tasted. You would not expect such a great burger from a place that concentrates mostly on their selection of beer. But let me tell you. If you want some tasty burger, you have to check this place out. Now let me get more into the details of the burger. I think you can just see from the picture (which I had to make a little larger so you can really enjoy the view) alone that this looks like the perfect Hamburger. Just as good as it looks it tastes. All of our burgers were cooked perfectly to what we ordered. The onion rings, which are really a onion wedge was a nice twist to the entire experience. The bacon was crispy and not greasy, the letters opps lettuce tasted fresh (Insider Burgergeek joke). The fries were perfectly done and the service was friendly and all around great. The price was reasonable what you expect for a burger. I have been thinking of anything negative I can say about this experience or the experience from our past visit and I can't find anything. Just writing this blog and thinking about this Burger again, makes me hungry for one. Yes people, that burger was that good. Now why didn't they get a 10 you might ask. Well, I've been thinking about this for a few days now. What would make that 10 Burger in my eyes. I think even though this burger stands out so much, I'm still missing that OH my God, I'm in Burger Heaven outburst. I didn't get that, close, but no cigar. But with all this said, I highly recommend this place if you want one tasty out of this world Burger. Enjoy and make sure you don't eat to many, so they have one left when I get back there, because I'm for sure going back there again and again and again........
Our recent hunt brought us to the Loop, located at 2014 San Marco Blvd. I've heard many good things about the loop and their burgers. I think last year they made best burger in Jacksonville by the newspaper. Again my hopes were high going into this. I think I need to stop working myself up on things that I hear about restaurants and wait until I actually taste what they have. Let me mention again that the opinions I put on this blog are mine only and my other Burgergeeks might not agree with my assessment.

With that said lets get to the meat of things sorte say. First a little to the restaurant. For me it was the first time at the Loop and I got the impression of a fancy fast food restaurant. Ordering your food upfront and then finding your seat gave me that impression. Nothing wrong with that setup during lunch, because you want your food fast. The food was fast, I think we waited around 10 min and our little device blinked to tell us to pick up our burgers. My burger was a regular burger with grilled mushrooms and steak fries. My first impression picking up the plate was about the fries. I was like, where the heck did they find those potatoes to make these fries, they were huge. Compared to the fries the burger looked tiny as you can see from the picture. Now, I ordered my burger medium as I always do. First impression taking a bite and looking at the meat, it was perfectly cooked. I was a bit disappointed at the mushrooms. They for sure looked and tasted like they came from a can. The lettuce and onions looked and tasted fresh. Of course now you must wonder, well, everything he is saying sounds good why the low score. Well, here is my problem with it. Going to the loop and knowing it was voted best burger in Jax I wanted to be wow'ed. That didn't happen. It was a good burger, but I was really missing the, wow factor, the out of the norm factor. It was just not there. Don't get me wrong, I would recommend this burger if you want your normal good burger. Would I vote this the best burger in Jacksonville. I don't think so. I have not found the burger yet that knocks my socks off where I would go, this is the best burger in Jax. So for the Burgergeeks, the hunt continues.............
There is a quote that comes to my mind from Alexander Pope “Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed.” I'm sure you can already see where this is going. I was disappointed at that burger. Let me get into why I was without getting into to much detail. As you can see from the picture it was for sure a nice looking burger. It was big, loaded with tons of stuff. Of course I had to get the little more fancy one with chili and so on. As a total package it looked promising. Huge onion rings with it, fries and I was excited to let me taste the hopefully first high rated burger of the burgergeeks. Well, I took the first bite and first thing that came to my mind was. Hmmm, taste just like another beef burger. There was no distinct Bison taste to it. I kept going, bite for bite I was looking or this, 'oh wow' factor. Still nothing. I do understand the meat is suppose to taste the same as beef, just better. I was not getting this.
Don't get me wrong with my review here. The burger wasn't bad at all. It was good, but again, not what I expected. If you read my review about hooters I have to say I started to get the same feeling here. It was a feeling of a fancy fast food burger. There was nothing special about it other than that it said it was Bison and with a over $25 dollar lunch bill shock just for myself, gave me another bad taste about the whole experience. I rated them a 2 out of 10 because even though it wasn't a bad burger, there was not a wow factor that put this burger in its own category, it was a fancy burger with a bad fast food after taste to it.
Today our schedule takes us to Ted's Montana Grill. We decided it was time to go find the "Cadillac" of burgers, so where better than Ted's Montana Grill.
They're known for their all natural bison, which is supposed to be better than beef, so we had high hopes to find a truly great burger.
My selection was the Red Rock burger. You can choose either a certified Angus beef patty or an all natural bison patty. I had to go for the bison, and I ordered it cooked medium. They top this with pepper jack cheese, fresh diced jalapenos, chopped cilantro and fried onion straws. Finally, they add something
called Z-sauce, and serve it all on a toasted ciabatta roll, accompanied with french fries. Sure sounded delicious, and at $14 bucks I expected it to be.

I rate my burgers in 3 main components for consistent ratings; 1) bun 2) burger 3) toppings for a total possible 9 points. I reserve 1 point for what I call the 'wow' factor, which to me is for a unique touch that a restaurant may add to their burger to make it unique.
Ted's serves the Red Rock burger on a ciabatta roll. Ordinarily this would earn top marks for the roll. I love ciabatta rolls, and I like to see something different than a plain hamburger bun. I think a good bun or roll can really add to the overall taste of a burger. Unfortunately, my ciabatta roll was so dry
that I would say it was almost stale. It just started falling apart when I tried to handled it.
If I've learned one thing about burgers, it's that how the burger is cooked can ruin the whole burger. I had ordered my burger cooked medium, and it was served under cooked, more medium rare. I didn't like the flavor of the bison at all served this rare.
The cheese, jalapenos, cilantro and onion straws were good. The Z-sauce? It looked and tasted like raspberry jelly. No wow factor there.
So, my search for a "Cadillac" burger ended up with a Yugo. My overall rating for my Red Rock burger is a 2. Truly a disappointment. The most expensive burger turns out to be one of the worst to date, and my bad experience was not the only one among our four burgers. After leaving the restaurant, my fellow Burger Geeks and I discussed the fact that paying so much for a poorly executed burger really
made the experience seem worse. I considered SUBTRACTING a point for the "wow" factor because "Wow, this burger sucked!", but I decided to let it stand as is.
