Here we are trying a seafood eatery for their burger. It was not because we didn't find any other burger place, but getting recommendations to see the two dudes for a great burger.
Sadly it didn't go as well as we thought. I was looking forward to this, because I saw on the menu that they had a burger topped with hot dogs and chili. Now, all of us that BBQ know, it is great to have burgers and hot dogs together, on their own, but together. Well, this restaurant had it and I thought, what a great combo, his has to be good.
Lets get to the review. I ordered the Atlantic beach, which they call the turtle burger. A combo between 8oz ground chuck, topped with grilled hot dogs and chili. Yeah, what a combo. This has to be good. I ordered my burger medium as I always do and the first thing that I check if they got the order right. No, right from the get-go, a strike against them.
The burger was well done and I realized when I cut into it, it looked very plain like regular hamburger meat with no spices in it. But I thought, well, looks might be wrong, so here we go. I tasted it. I expected to be overwhelmed with all those different flavors in one, burger, dogs, chili and was waiting for the explosion. hmmmm, I'm still waiting. Let me make this short and right to the point. The meat had no spices in it, the hot dogs were alright, the chili was very plain too. Oh wait, there was cheese on it as well. I'm not a cheese person and forgot to tell them to keep it off. Didn't matter because I didn't taste it. I was afraid I was losing my taste that day, but I wasn't. My partner in crime was the same opinion. It wasn't a bad burger, good size and great price for what you get. But I wish they would do more with spices. So in my review I would have to give them a 3 out of 10. My partner is giving a bit higher rating, that is why the average is 3.5.
On a side note to the review, we also tried their shrimps and they were awesome. Great size and great taste. Their fries were also great. Would I go back for a burger. Doubt it. For seafood, absolutely. In my opinion, the burger could be great if they pay more attention to what people order and add more spices to their meat.

Ketchup 9.5 out of 10
Let me start his blog with this....holy moly, what a freaking huge burger. Now that I got this out, lets review our next Burgergeeks burger challenge. We'd been contacted by the owner to see if he is right that he has the best burger in Jacksonville. Well, lets see if he does. First impression was that we loved the menu, many choices when it comes to the burger and also as I call the 'wow' factor. Burgers that you normally don't see as a combo like a burger with shrimp, whhhattttt?? OK, this will be interesting. So, for myself I thought I'll go for the the big one, the "Andy Altee" which is two 8oz patties, 3 slices of cheese, and 6 slices of bacon. Bring it on. As you can see from the picture, they brought it on. As always, I ordered mine cooked medium and with fries. I saw that they also had chili and with me spending a lot of time in TEXAS and loving chili (and I happen to make one kick ass chili myself) I had to order that too. More on that later. So, first thing I check was if the burger was cooked correctly and it was.
Right on the money as you can see from the picture when I cut it open. The size of this thing is amazing, just mind blowing. Now the next thing I do is taste the meat by itself to see how the seasoning is and man is it good. Yeah, someone took some time with this meat. It had a great taste to it. Well seasoned and very juicy when I tasted it. I have to give them so much credit for their bacon as well. Those were not some little strings of bacon that you get in so many restaurants in town. Oh no, these were some real thick slices of bacon and perfectly cooked. Not greasy and very crispy. I'm getting more and more the feeling those cooks in there know what they were doing. I'm still amazed how big this burger was. Let me go on with the cheese and the entire thing. It all fitted perfectly together. Even the bun was a great tasting bread and what not to frufru as so many other places try to make. Was simple and right to the point being a hamburger bun and not to forget, to cover this massive amount of food and keeping it together. Now for the lettuce I wasn't to impressed about it, but to me that was just minor and didn't effect the score in my mind. I was after the cow sorte say and man oh man did they put a good part of this cow on there.
Yeah Chic-fil-A you lost with this competition on eating more chicken. I had to add another picture when I cut it open so you all can see what this burger looks like cut open. I mean look at that thing. I don't think the picture does it even justice. Let me also add this, I'm not a tiny guy and I love food and I know how to eat, but I could not finish this monster. I pretty much took another meal with me home which I loved. Let me say this that you better bring some hunger when you order that one from the menu. I was very pleased with this hamburger and after the last two burger attempts we reviewed I'm glad we went to taste this one.
Now on a side note let me give a quick review on the fries and chili. I can't stand it when you get rubbery fries drenched in greasy like we have been served in a few restaurants. Again, what a great job on the fries, well cooked, no rubbery feel, not greasy and very crispy. Now the chili, my hats off, finally some restaurant in Jax that knows how to make chili. You can get it with beans or without, of course I had to get it without. It was fantastic. Whoever came up with that recipe knows how to make chili and how to cook it. So again my hat is off.
So in my humble opinion, this burger from Ketchup gets a 10 out of 10 from me. Would I drive to Mayport to get this burger? I would have to say not only yes, but Hell Yes! Well worth it. Also great atmosphere and the staff was friendly and very attentive. Not to forget you can bring your dog to sit outside and they feed them too, which I got a kick out off and love that.
After we completed our review and paid our bill, we notified the owner and Chef Ace French that we were there. I was very impressed how concerned he was what we felt about the burger. It really came through that he is really proud of the food he serves there and told us how he gets up at 6 in the morning just to get the meat ready and mixed. Now this shows me how restaurants should care what they give to their customers. For sure he does. In this place they just don't mass produce their food and care what they give you. That was my impression. So happy to see that after some other reviews we had and just being treated like the next number. I can't wait to go back and taste some of the other burgers or even other items on their menu. If they are as good as this, then man oh man I have to drive to Mayport often. I highly recommend this restaurant if you want a burger that is out of the norm in our town. Now the question is, who can out do them. We have some more restaurants to review in the coming months......the challenge continues........

Do you like really good burgers? Then I think we found a place for you. Our latest burger review brought us to Ketchup, located at 2434 Mayport Road. This was a lunchtime visit and I brought my appetite (I was starving). The first thing I noticed was that the burger menu was impressive. I had to step back and ponder which burger I wanted to try. There were more creative combinations here than any other place we've visited so far: 14 different 8 oz. burgers and one 16 oz. behemoth called the Andy Altee. Styles ranged from the Classic burger with lettuce, tomato and onion, to the Harley burger topped with pulled pork and melted Jack cheese, to the Wooten burger with fried oysters, wasabi cream sauce and pepper jack cheese. And if you prefer, each combination can be ordered on chicken instead of beef. I settled on the Avery, which is a half pound burger topped with fried onion straws, sautéed Vidalia onions and melted smoked Gouda. I ordered fries as my included side, and added a bowl of their homemade chili with beans. When my burger arrived, my jaw dropped. This thing was HUGE. The burger was cooked to medium as ordered. The burger patty was flavorful and juicy with a hint of the applewood smoked bacon. The bun was fresh and the onion toppings were in ample supply. I love onions but I did remove some of the topping to suite my taste and to not drown out the flavor of the rest of the ingredients. I truly enjoyed this burger. The fries were perfectly cooked and served hot. The chili was very good as well. I ordered mine with beans, while my counterpart prefers his without. Ketchup makes a batch of each so take your pick. The chili comes topped with shredded cheddar cheese and sliced onions (I think diced would be better so they mix in easier). Between the huge burger, mound of French fries, and the chili I couldn't finish everything, so I took my chili home to enjoy the next day. I don't think anyone goes home hungry after eating at Ketchup.
I rated my Avery burger as follows: 3 points for the fresh-ground black angus and bacon patty, 2 points for the bun, 3 points for the generous toppings, plus a well-deserved "wow factor" point for such a massive, tasty burger. My overall individual rating: 9. I will definately go back to try some of the other creative burger combinations. I also want to try the housemade hotdogs and deserts. Ketchup is the real deal.

Olio 9 out of 10
Today our search took us in the middle of Jacksonville downtown area. We visited Olio, located at 301 E. Bay Street. Right away I have to say, the restaurant gave out a European flavor and felt different. The staff was very friendly and was ready to help with any kind of special requests we had to the burger. Well lets see how they done. As you can see the burger looked great in the presentation with the fries in the paper cup. My little addition to the wow factor was to have them put a egg on it sunny side up. Yes I know, some of you might go, ewwww, how can you. Well, you better try it, because it tastes awesome if done right. I have to say, Olio did it right. The burger tasted very good. Good enough that I would take a drive just to get their burger. Everything tasted fresh and the bun was right on the money as well. I would have to put them into my high category of the voted 9's when it comes to burger reviews. Excellent job Olio, keep it up. But, we are still hunting for the best burgers in Jax, so many to taste, so little time. On we go, its a dirty job, but somebody has to do it..............

Cruisers Grill 1 out of 10
No I didn't put up the wrong rating on that one. You did read right. Our first 1 rating from all the places we reviewed. I'm still shocked I had to give this low of a rating.
Lets get to the meat of it all. Our search brought us to Cruisers Grill. I'm sure some of you in Jacksonville heard about Cruisers Grill and that they made a local news papers number 1 slot for best burger in Jax. I was looking forward to visiting this place for a few months now. I was also informed that they made another article in the recent week being voted as the one of the best burger places in town. Well, I was excited to test them out.
As some of you already know I always look for the wow factor in burgers. The ones that are different from a regular burger. The other burgergeeks stick to the normal ones and they will have their own rating on these. So, when I sat down and saw the sign, Burger of the week, deep fried I was all fired up. As you remember, the Bubba Burger deep fried burger was awesome. So, of course I had to order it. Now as you can see from the picture I was a little set back when it arrived. My first impression of just the look was, 'oh my, this looks like an old shoe sole'. But I thought, well, looks can be deceiving, so I went or it. My first thought taking a bite was, no way, they must be kidding. If they would have deep fried the shoe sole I'm sure it would have tasted better. OMG, in one word I have to say: This burger was total shyte. I really try not to slam any kind of restaurant even if I'm not impressed with their burger. But this was not a burger but some meat they thought, lets throw this into hot oil and deep fry it and it will be good, as they say, everything deep friend is good. Hellll no it isn't. This was a perfect example it wasn't. There was no batter on it, nothing, just a bunch of ground beef that they deep fried. I think if you just click on the image of it and view the close up you can see what I'm saying. I also have to say that the fries were alright. Seemed to me not cooked long enough and tasted a little raw on the inside.
Now the other burgergeeks had their regular burgers and they said that they were alright, but in no way could they call this top winner of burgers in Jacksonville. I think the no named newspaper should look at some of our reviews and make a better decision on who has the best burger in Jax. For sure, this place does not. I'm so disappointed.
Well, what can I say, the hunt continues........

TGIF 5 out of 10
I can almost hear the groans of discontent coming from TGIFriday's fans. My rating is not a reflection on the restaurant. It is strictly about the burger. On the recommendation of another burger geek, I ordered the Jack Daniel's burger. It is served with your choice of the standard burger toppings as well as cheese, bacon, and an awesome Jack Daniel's sauce - which comes on the side. In my opinion, the sauce definitely makes this burger. I'll explain. Immediately, I noticed that the shape and size of everybody's burger was identical - no variation. As a national chain striving for consistency, they hit the bull's eye. The bacon, which was lying cross-crossed on the melted cheese, was neither underdone nor overdone. My first taste of the sauce was on a french fry. I was pleasantly surprised as it didn't taste anything like I was expecting it would based on the name. It was sweet without a hint of pungent alcohol that I was expecting. I ordered the burger well done. It came as ordered and wasn't dried out or burnt. As I took my first bite with the sauce, I was impressed with how good the burger was. However, after a few more bites, I had to know if it was only the sauce that impressed me. So, I tried a bite of burger only. That's when I knew it's all about the sauce. The burger standing on its own was very bland. After that minor let down, I realized that the entire meal was, at best, lukewarm. Without the sauce, this would have been like any other chain's burger. And, that is why I rate it a 5. No, I wouldn't drive 5 miles out of my way to have this burger; but, I would definitely recommend it to friends.

I would have to say, I was looking forward to testing this Burger. One of our other geeks was very impressed with this burger when he gotten it before. A Jack Daniel's burger, how can you go wrong with that title in it? Well, I hate to disagree with my brother in crime, but I wasn't to impressed with the burger. The BBQ sauce was outstanding. It made the entire burger. Without it though, the burger tasted pretty ordinary. Tasted like there were no spices used for it. Now, TGIF did a great job on that BBQ addition to the hamburger. I think you could put this on anything and it would taste fantastic. In this case I voted for a 5 out of 10, the reason being, that the addition of the BBQ sauce made that burger and for sure worth trying. As Becky mentioned though, I wouldn't take a drive just to go there to get it. Also one of the things that always gets me in restaurants. If you cook the burger all the way, then don't ask me how I would like it. If I say medium, it should be and not cooked all the way. The hunt continues.........

Pine Grove Market 6.5 out of 10
Our hunt for the best burger in Jacksonville brought us to the Pine Grove Market http://www.pinegrovemarket.com/ . First impression I have to say I like those kind of places. Small neighborhood places where you can find some of the secret culinary places that give you the best experiences.
Let's get right to the burger. The first thing that hit me was the presentation. I think this was the first time I saw a burger cut in half. My burger was ordered medium and right away I could see, yup, cooked perfectly. As you can see from the picture it was a great size as well. Looking at the burger I have to say, it looked great, smelled good, so the first impression was: 'Yes I'm looking forward to this'. Once I took my first bite I have to say it tasted very good. The mixture of spices and the meat tasted great. As you can see from the picture I ordered mine with fries and with onion rings. Holy crap those rings where huge. They as well tasted very good as the fries did.
I'm sure you wonder why my score isn't higher with me saying everything was good. Well, as you know I'm looking for the extra wow factor when it comes to burgers. This was a great burger, but it reminded me to much of a burger I would do at home. So, yes, I know, isn't that what it should be? Great tasting burger you could get home? Yes and no. I'm looking for the burger which I can't do at home or blows my mind how well it was done. In this instance I have to say. Yes, the burger was great but somehow was missing the umpf sorte say. Would I recommend going there to try it. Absolutely I would recommend it. Would I take the drive there though just for the hamburger. I would have to say, no.

My first BurgerGeek foray was to the Pine Grove Market in Riverside just east of Park Street. The Market is a neighborhood jewel. The kind of place I imagine exists on most NYC corners. On to the review. My first impression was this looks like my Momma's burger: Thick and moist, made with quality beef. That the burger and fries were served on a real plate may have added to the illusion. Taking my first bite, I was pleased by the taste: not to much seasoning and not bland. Moist but not falling apart. Definitely fresh, quality beef. Not frozen, trucked and thawed patties. The only thing missing were the cross-hatch marks and that slight hickory flavor from a backyard grill. The fries were nicely done. Not to thick or to thin with a good flavor. They complimented the burger well. The available toppings were the expected minimum burger standards - which was more than enough for me.
That said, my rating is a 7 out of 10. Why? I really could make a burger like this myself. However, for a quick fix of homemade on a hectic workday without the prep and cleanup hassle, this burger would sure do the trick. Using the BurgerGeek drive scale, no, I wouldn't go out of my way to have this burger; but, if I was already in the neighborhood, you bet I would.

Harpoon Louies 7 out of 10
Our best burger in Jacksonville brought us to Harpoon Louie's located at 4070 Herschel street.
I was looking forward to this, because I had a few people recommending this place to us. So let's get right to the burger. Out of our group I'm mainly the one who is looking for that wow factor, meaning, what can I put on it or order that makes it different.
As you can see from the picture I got it loaded up in addition to chili all over my fries.

This was a good burger. It had good taste and was what you are looking for in a burger. Now of course we are not looking for the average burger, but for the ones that stand out. Did this one stand out? Well, it was good all around, but didn't stand out.
As one of the burgergeeks uses this for giving his rating. Would I eat a burger here if I'm here, yes. Would I drive here for just the burger, no. So in short do we recommend it? Yes. You won't be disappointed. Is it the best burger in Jacksonville? No.

Dave and Busters 5 out of 10
Our endless search brought us to Dave and Busters. As we all know this place is famous for the gaming but we got the recommendation to try their burgers. Sorry to say I wish we didn't get it. I didn't have big hopes, but you never know where you find that great burger. Let's get right into it. Right from the get go I was disappointed that the burger was not cooked, how I wanted it. Why ask how you want your burger, if you can't provide it.
Just looking at the picture I think you can already see the problem. It was so greasy, which of course gives the burger normally a great taste and texture, but not here. The minute you picked this burger up, it was just dripping the fat, way to much for my taste. All the burgers we got were the same size, the same cut, the same grease. It was screaming 'I'm a frozen burger' for mass production. Overall it had an alright taste, nothing special about it. If you are there for the games and want a quick burger, sure, why not. Would I recommend it? No.

The Loop 6 out of 10
Our recent hunt brought us to the Loop, located at 2014 San Marco Blvd. I've heard many good things about the loop and their burgers. I think last year they made best burger in Jacksonville by the newspaper. Again my hopes were high going into this. I think I need to stop working myself up on things that I hear about restaurants and wait until I actually taste what they have. Let me mention again that the opinions I put on this blog are mine only and my other Burgergeeks might not agree with my assessment.
With that said lets get to the meat of things sorte say. First a little to the restaurant. For me it was the first time at the Loop and I got the impression of a fancy fast food restaurant. Ordering your food upfront and then finding your seat gave me that impression. Nothing wrong with that setup during lunch, because you want your food fast. The food was fast, I think we waited around 10 min and our little device blinked to tell us to pick up our burgers. My burger was a regular burger with grilled mushrooms and steak fries. My first impression picking up the plate was about the fries. I was like, where the heck did they find those potatoes to make these fries, they were huge. Compared to the fries the burger looked tiny as you can see from the picture. Now, I ordered my burger medium as I always do. First impression taking a bite and looking at the meat, it was perfectly cooked. I was a bit disappointed at the mushrooms. They for sure looked and tasted like they came from a can. The lettuce and onions looked and tasted fresh. Of course now you must wonder, well, everything he is saying sounds good why the low score. Well, here is my problem with it. Going to the loop and knowing it was voted best burger in Jax I wanted to be wow'ed. That didn't happen. It was a good burger, but I was really missing the, wow factor, the out of the norm factor. It was just not there. Don't get me wrong, I would recommend this burger if you want your normal good burger. Would I vote this the best burger in Jacksonville. I don't think so. I have not found the burger yet that knocks my socks off where I would go, this is the best burger in Jax. So for the Burgergeeks, the hunt continues.............

Ted's Montana Grill St. Johns 2 out of 10
Our burger hunt brought us to Ted's Montana Grill located in the town center. I've been looking forward to this for a few weeks. I was very excited to finally taste a Bison burger made by someone who specializes in Bison meats. First a little about the restaurant. For sure something to see and experience. Enough said, back to the burgers. I think all the burgergeeks were excited and had high hopes for this restaurant.
There is a quote that comes to my mind from Alexander Pope “Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed.” I'm sure you can already see where this is going. I was disappointed at that burger. Let me get into why I was without getting into to much detail. As you can see from the picture it was for sure a nice looking burger. It was big, loaded with tons of stuff. Of course I had to get the little more fancy one with chili and so on. As a total package it looked promising. Huge onion rings with it, fries and I was excited to let me taste the hopefully first high rated burger of the burgergeeks. Well, I took the first bite and first thing that came to my mind was. Hmmm, taste just like another beef burger. There was no distinct Bison taste to it. I kept going, bite for bite I was looking or this, 'oh wow' factor. Still nothing. I do understand the meat is suppose to taste the same as beef, just better. I was not getting this.
Don't get me wrong with my review here. The burger wasn't bad at all. It was good, but again, not what I expected. If you read my review about hooters I have to say I started to get the same feeling here. It was a feeling of a fancy fast food burger. There was nothing special about it other than that it said it was Bison and with a over $25 dollar lunch bill shock just for myself, gave me another bad taste about the whole experience. I rated them a 2 out of 10 because even though it wasn't a bad burger, there was not a wow factor that put this burger in its own category, it was a fancy burger with a bad fast food after taste to it.
Today our schedule takes us to Ted's Montana Grill. We decided it was time to go find the "Cadillac" of burgers, so where better than Ted's Montana Grill.
They're known for their all natural bison, which is supposed to be better than beef, so we had high hopes to find a truly great burger.
My selection was the Red Rock burger. You can choose either a certified Angus beef patty or an all natural bison patty. I had to go for the bison, and I ordered it cooked medium. They top this with pepper jack cheese, fresh diced jalapenos, chopped cilantro and fried onion straws. Finally, they add something
called Z-sauce, and serve it all on a toasted ciabatta roll, accompanied with french fries. Sure sounded delicious, and at $14 bucks I expected it to be.
I rate my burgers in 3 main components for consistent ratings; 1) bun 2) burger 3) toppings for a total possible 9 points. I reserve 1 point for what I call the 'wow' factor, which to me is for a unique touch that a restaurant may add to their burger to make it unique.
Ted's serves the Red Rock burger on a ciabatta roll. Ordinarily this would earn top marks for the roll. I love ciabatta rolls, and I like to see something different than a plain hamburger bun. I think a good bun or roll can really add to the overall taste of a burger. Unfortunately, my ciabatta roll was so dry
that I would say it was almost stale. It just started falling apart when I tried to handled it.
If I've learned one thing about burgers, it's that how the burger is cooked can ruin the whole burger. I had ordered my burger cooked medium, and it was served under cooked, more medium rare. I didn't like the flavor of the bison at all served this rare.
The cheese, jalapenos, cilantro and onion straws were good. The Z-sauce? It looked and tasted like raspberry jelly. No wow factor there.
So, my search for a "Cadillac" burger ended up with a Yugo. My overall rating for my Red Rock burger is a 2. Truly a disappointment. The most expensive burger turns out to be one of the worst to date, and my bad experience was not the only one among our four burgers. After leaving the restaurant, my fellow Burger Geeks and I discussed the fact that paying so much for a poorly executed burger really
made the experience seem worse. I considered SUBTRACTING a point for the "wow" factor because "Wow, this burger sucked!", but I decided to let it stand as is.

River City Brewing company 7 out of 10
Today our burger adventure took us to the very scenic restaurant by the river. We had to check out if a classy restaurant is able to produce a good burger.
First I have to say that the place itself shows class and to my surprise a very reasonable lunch menu. In addition to the atmosphere you get a gorgeous view of our river and city. But enough of that, the important aspect is, can they make a good burger?
I have to say I didn't expect the hamburger to taste as homemade as it did. We asked if they burgers were done fresh and were told, they are handmade fresh daily.
As you can see the hamburger not only looked good, but tasted great. You could really taste that it came of a grill and in my case, asking for medium, was perfectly medium cooked. The burger was topped with mushrooms and were also perfectly done. The salad tasted fresh and the fries were very good as well. I rated them a 7 out of 10 and would recommend this burger to anybody who wants a good one in addition to a great dining experience with a wonderful view of our city.

Hunt club 7 stars out of 10
The hunt club is located at 6426 Bowden Rd. , their site is huntclubsubsngrill.com
My first impression was, wow, different kind of place. You are greeted with deer heads on the wall and a bunch of hunter memorabilia around. My first thoughts were, oh yes, they should know a good burger.
Seeing antillope burger and elk burger on the menu really got me exited, sadly, haven't been able to try them yet, they always been out, but I will and once I do I will update this post.
But back to the burger that they did have. I've ordered the double barrel burger and as you can see from the picture, a good looking burger and size. As you can see I ordered the Cajun spice fries with it. Now to the taste test. The burger was very good. I liked the spices they used and also the freshness of it. I wish mine would have been a bit more moist, but the other burgergeek had a more moist one. His review should be posted pretty soon.
The bacon was crisp and plenty of it. The staff was nice and friendly. I will give them a rating of 7 out of 10 because I wish my burger was a bit more moist and being there twice, not having what you offer on your menu, talking about the elk and antiloppe burger rubbed me a little wrong. I might give them a higher rating once I tasted them, because I do look for the burgers out of the norm.
